The Story of Paws Cat Cafe

Everybody says "Do what you love" and "Do what makes you happy" don't they? Well here at Paws, it kind of took that to the extreme. This is our story and it is like no other. Paws Cat Cafe was born from a "lightbulb" moment, mental health struggles, and of course, cats...sounds like a weird combo I know, but stay with us and you'll understand!

It started when the manager here at Paws, Lauren, bought her mum and the future owner of Paws, Elaine, 2 cats for her birthday, much to Elaine's husbands demise! Simba and Nala were not the newest members of the family for long, as Nala fell pregnant and had 3 gorgeous kittens! Obviously...they kept them all! So that's where the cats fit in, now "what about the mental health struggles?" I hear you ask. Well...

Elaine's mental health had deteriorated and anxiety and depression had taken over her life, so much so that she had to take 3 months leave from work at a time where she barely left her bed! And it was in that very bed, with a cat sleeping on each corner, that something clicked and just couldn't go back to a job that made her so unhappy. After brainstorming for a while about things that made her happy that she could pursue instead, all that came to mind was her beloved cats. And so, the entire idea of Paws was born within about a day, with the whole family on board, the cafe opened sometime later and they've never been happier! (Neither have the 17 rescue kitties that now take up residence in the cafe!)

The whole plan was to create a calming environment for anyone else who may be struggling with their mental health, or for anyone who just needs a furry fix and some delicious coffee and cake! So not only has the cafe made Elaine's life infinitely better, it is also serving to help others, and cats too! 17 cats are no longer in a shelter and are loved and fussed over everyday (it's a hard life for a cat) because of Paws.

Keep your eyes peeled for the next post!

  1. Yes, something I can relate too. My mental heath I've struggled with also. At the time when I had a hysterectomy and never had children. My cat Oliver came to me at 8 weeks old and he helped me so much. He is now a 8 yr old and a lovable, cuddly boy. I love visiting Paws cat cafe and cant wait till it opens again
